Bronx
- 1 fluid ounce of London dry gin
- ½ fluid ounce of Italian vermouth
- ½ fluid ounce of French vermouth
- ½ fluid ounce of fresh orange juice
Shake all of the ingredients with ice and double strain into a frozen cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange twist or peel.
Crystal Bronx
Skip the gin, serve in a highball or collins glass, and top with sparkling water or soda water.
Queens
Replace the orange juice with fresh pineapple juice. Pineapples are less trivial to juice than citrus, so according to The Savoy Cocktail Book (1930), use “½ slice of crushed pineapple”. Do not garnish.
The Bronx cocktail was actually named for the borough’s zoo.
As the Bronx and Queens cocktails pair off in similarity, while representing two New York City boroughs, so do the Manhattan and Brooklyn cocktails.
