Martinez
- 1 fluid ounce of Old Tom gin
- 2 fluid ounces of Italian vermouth
- 1 teaspoon of maraschino liqueur
- 1 dash of a Boker’s bitters substitute
Stir all of the ingredients with ice in frozen mixing glass and strain into a frozen cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist or peel.
This cocktail is not a riff on the Martini, it’s actually the missing link leading up to the Martini. It’s a sweet, gin-based, Manhattan-derived cocktail with an old-fashioned flipped vermouth ratio that would eventually morph into the dry, spirit-forward Martini of the 20ᵗʰ century as tastes moved drier.
