1 fluid ounce of Italian vermouth

1 fluid ounce of Italian bitter red liqueur
(recommended: Aperitivo Cappelletti¹)
Stir all of the ingredients with ice, strain into a highball or collins glass over fresh cubed ice, and top with sparkling water or soda water. Garnish with an orange or lemon peel.
This drink actually preceded the Negroni which was a more alcoholic derivative.

Aperitivo Cappelletti is recommended for a drier, less alcoholic highball. However, Campari is the standard and more easily accessible choice.
